Through your actions you can show that you are truly remorseful. There are two very important things you need to realise before even thinking about apologising just for the sake of it. First is that you might have caused someone close to you distress. The other is admitting to yourself that you might have been wrong. On both accounts facing the truth can be quite unpleasant, which is why saying sorry is such a difficult thing to do.
